mizuki, at least in my opinion, is a wonderful allegory for what it means to be trans. specifically, the first thing i'd like to touch on is the fear of coming out to other people. mizuki's struggle is a "secret" that they have, as both they and the game state it as. in their first comissioned song, IDSMILE has a theme of alienation, being afraid that certain ascpects of the person will be judged. lyrics such as "Even though this is a starting point with no end/I want to connect with you, so I won’t part with my secret", stayed close to me specifically. it's scary in any way, not knowing how people will react to what you are.

their second comissioned song, lower, is kind of a continuation to this. at this point in time, mizuki is noticably closer to their friends, now even more nervous about being seen. they are afraid of being left alone, even more fearful of how they might react. "If we are to be separated, if we are to lose our way/I’ll make sure we’ll be connected this time, no matter how many times it takes" is a lyric that resonated close to my heart, the feeling that you would go through everything thousands of times over, just to see the person once again.

give me your night is mizuki's third comissioned song, showing just how close they have become, and just how much worse a negative reaction to their secret would be. the lyrics "All along, all along, I’d been longing for the dawn of a new day, for a “today” that won’t fade away.", is a lyric that touched me closely. i saw this line as the "today" refering to people who wouldn't leave eventually. it's shown in some events how people in mizuki's class don't like them, and tend to isolate or tease them. in this case, nightcord's nightly meetings are something mizuki wants to see transfered to a regular thing, being able to have friends that are more than just group members, people they can have a deep and true connection with.

mizuki's most reccent comissioned song, kitty, is almost like the icing on the cake. in the actual event (which i haven't brought up much, considering i don't read events often) it's all about mizuki helping out mafuyu. both characters struggle with identity, and their duets in the song reflect that wonderfully. while they appear together in the MV a lot, the only lyrics they both sing together is "I don't care if this song is wrong. I'll sing my throat hoarse". even though they can't quite relate to each other, they both see how the other is reaching for a world where they are accepted as who they are. and instead of simply wishing for it to come true, they carve out their own place. that really touched me.

mizuki's struggles are understandable. even if their secret is something completely different, the worries that come with telling people who you are, and the fears of rejection, are something almost universal. if i could, i would give them a big 'ol hug, because they DESERVE IT !!

If you can't tell, i like mizuki. i think they're a super fun character, and it's fun to see them on-screen !!
